Bar Set-up
A well-stocked bar is a happy bar, but it could leave its owner broke. My suggestion; take it slow and build up your bar over time. There are so many things you need to consider if you’re outfitting your bar from scratch, it can be a bit daunting. As a former bartender, this all comes as second nature to me, but I’ve been there – where to begin?
First, take an inventory of what you have verses our Checklist. Anything missing? Or, are you working with just a few glass beer mugs from your college days? If so, we have some ideas for you. Second, what is your entertaining style, or what types of entertaining do you want to pursue? The type of entertaining you do or plan to do will dictate how you set-up your bar. Keep in mind drinking is just like any other aspect of our consumer lives, certain cocktails are in fashion, and then out of fashion. Take the old fashion, for example. Who really drinks them anymore? Scotches were the rage not long ago, but where have they gone? Fortunately martinis, my drink of choice, will be around for a long long time.
Glassware – now here’s where things can get a bit dicey. If you want to be the consummate entertainer, you best be prepared to spend some time and money securing all the different glassware that’s required for all the different cocktails and serving situations.
Are you a wine snob? If so, you probably already have yourself a set of quality crystal red and white wine goblets. If you want to start enjoying wine more, you owe it to yourself and your guests to spend the bucks and do this one thing right. Wine is way too much fun to experiment with and enjoy and you must have the right glassware (Sorry). If you’re going to spend money, put it here. You won’t regret it.
Cocktails, wine, beer; there’s so much to talk about we just can’t cover it all in one shot. So for now, take time to think about what you and your friends drink, how you want to entertain in the future and start making your plans accordingly.
